Beginner Series

Foundation moves taught in beginner level
  • Guapea – basic footwork: follow and lead both step back (away), then forward into each other (together). 8 Counts. There is a pause in the music on 4 and 8 in which dancers follow a "Quick, Quick, Slow" tempo pattern. Follows start on their right foot back, leads start with their left foot back.
  • Dile Que No – Switch sides. Follow goes inside the circle on 1,2,3 and back out to the next lead on 5, 6, 7. On 4, the follow is inside the circle putting their hip in. They are not stepping. The lead steps toward the follow on 1, 2, 3, and brings the follow to the other side on 5,6, 7.
  • Dame – Switch partners in the circle. Follows prep for Dile Que No on 5,6,7 – Leads go to new follow on 5,6,7 then new partners do Dile Que No.
  • Enchufla – Lead switches hand position to signal to the follow, and brings the follow forward as they walk forward. Both the follow and lead step forward on 1,2,3 and switch sides.  On 5,6, 7 the follow walks back to the circle arc line and faces inside the circle to prep for Dile Que No. The lead on 5,6,7 is walking toward the next follow and then does Dile Que No.
  • Al medio - the way we start the circle to get on the same beat. (tap, tap)
  • Abajao (levela pa’bajo) – follow does enchufla footwork. Lead is bringing follow in and out of the circle.
  • Exhíbala – Right pivot turn inside the circle for follows.
  • Vacilala -  ("Show off the follow"). Turn for follow separate from the lead .  Both the lead and follow are open on 7. The lead pulls the follow forward on 1 and lets go. Lead does enchufla footwork to go away and then back to the follow and picks them up for dile que no. At the same time, the follow preps on 7 with a right foot tap, then steps in place with right foot, turns to the right (360 degrees) using right, left, right foot pattern on the 1,2,3. On the 5,6,7, the follow walks forward, semi circle turn back to the lead (left, right left). Then does dile que no.

The Art of Calling

Part 1: Rueda Awareness
  1. Always make eye contact across the rueda to make sure the group is following along.
  2. Use (learn) proper hand signals. Most moves have a non-verbal hand signal
  3. Enunciate and extend the calls (project your voice).
  4. Call with good energy (your voice helps create the mood of the rueda. Happy voices = happy wheel).
  5. Practice to a song you like before calling the rueda in a social situation to feel more confident.

Part II: Moves to Call at the Start of a Rueda

  • Arriba Tiempo Espana
    • Un Tarro (leads move forward to next partner)
    • Un Tarro Mentira (leads turn in a circle)
  • Abajo (when called after Arriba, it is typically to go backwards – but it could also mean to go in and out of the circle (side to side for leads and enchufla step for follows) so follow what the caller does).
    • When going backwards calling Un Tarro means that follows move forward to the next partner.
    • Un Tarro Mentira – follows walk around leads in 8 counts
